The < 3 G E N

Project

The < 3 G E N Project is a hybrid (digital-physical), immersive and interactive AR theatre show based on a semi-structured psychological/sociological research on the digital divide between three generations of women from the same family.

This project stems from the urgent need to investigate the profound shifts brought about by the digital age in the relationships among grandmothers, mothers, and daughters. It seeks to address the widening and often insurmountable gaps that have emerged between them.

Our objective is to bring forth the evolving dynamics and roles within the female lineage, while simultaneously offering tools to enhance communication and active listening to our audience.

We aim to facilitate the rediscovery of the inherent value in intergenerational bonds.

The < 3 G E N Project will present both a specific online staging and a live, physical performance in which the portrayal of the grandmother struggling and feeling “older and obsolete” will underscore the potential repercussions on the elderly, emphasizing the necessity for inclusive solutions that cater to their evolving needs.

The character of the mother “worrying and hiding her struggles” will bring attention to the emotional toll and internal conflicts experienced by a significant demographic. This insight is pivotal for our project, address individuals who may be concealing their difficulties.

The emphasis will be on the daughter as the “target of the pressure” and paradoxically the most vulnerable one without the support or presence of her elders in her digital life.

This perspective underscores the urgency for interventions bridging generational gaps.

Comprehensive support for all demographics navigating the complexities of the digital landscape becomes imperative. This is our final goal and the effect we want to have in our audience.

Phase 1 - THE RESEARCH

The first phase of the project is a research where we will gather data through an ad hoc questionnaire, aimed at analyzing how each of the members of the family relate to each other, use technology, relate to the internet and how using digital technology has affected the way they connect with each other in their personal relationships.

Keeping pace with technological advancements is becoming an immense task for all three generations. How do each of them deal with it? How does it affect them?

We can observe the digital divide growing larger and faster than ever before, what do we do about it?

The societal impact of technological evolution is profound. We live in a “state of anxiety”, collective unease as we try to grapple with rapid changes.

The questionnaire is about exploring and understanding the relationships between three generations of women: grandmothers, mothers, and daughters and the focus is on how the internet and social media have influenced these relationships.

Phase 2 - THE DATA

A team of psychologists and artists will carefully examine the gathered data. The findings from this research will be used to create a practical booklet with exercises, advice, and tips on how to strengthen the connection between grandmothers, mothers, and daughters, both in their in-person and online interactions.

Phase 3 - THE SHOW

During the third phase of the project we will devise the play text and we will stage the show.

The < 3 G E N Project show is a hybrid experience, its physical part is immersive and interactive with three different proposals for each age group. For example, the age group of the grandmother will have a screen in front of them that will show images they will relate with, for example, while a video of Elvis is playing for a video of Billie Eilish will be playing in AR in front of the granddaughter, their cultural references are all different and that will inform the images and the language we speak with each of them. In essence, the physical staging will be three different shows in one.

“Before we were conceived, we existed in part as an egg in our mother’s ovary. All the eggs a woman will ever carry form in her ovaries while she is a four-month-old fetus in the womb of her mother.

This means our cellular life as an egg begins in the womb of our grandmother.

Each of us spent five months in our grandmother’s womb and she in turn formed within the womb of her grandmother.

We vibrate to the rhythms of our mother’s blood before she herself is born.

And this pulse is the thread of blood that runs all the way back through the grandmothers to the first mother.”
